Governor candidate Joe Canada, a previous cosponsor of the bill change sides at the last minute and vote against ERA, said Clarke. “The vote was 20 to 18 for and'we needed 21.”
“The tide is with us but we only have 20 more months to do it,” Clarke said. Virginia is the only unratified state with an election this year and ERA workers estimate that seven additional votes are needed to get the proposal through the House of Delegates. Both Garke and Jensen urged women to contact local candidates. “Let them know where you stand,” they advised.
