Does Rappahannock County need a six-member School Board? The School Trustee Electors will decide this question at a public meeting scheduled for Friday evening at 8 p.m. in the Elementary School.
Questions have been raised about the legality of an at-large membership, occasioned by the vacancy created with the retirement of E. N. Montague.
Approximately six years ago, Hawthorne School District was eliminated and its area absorbed by Stonewall and Piedmont Districts. Since that time, an at-large member has served on the Board. At Friday’s meeting, the Electors may choose to either fill Montague’s position or eliminate it. Appointment of an atlarge member is entirely legal—and entirely the decision of the Trustee Electoral Board. The Electors can appoint a replacement but are not required to do so, according to Chairman Ned Johnson.
