There are no hard and fast criteria to be met by prospective School Board members. The three court appointed Electors take into consideration whether the candidate is a voting tax payer, owns property, has a fair education and good business judgment—and whether the candidate has children attending Rappahannock Schools.
Currently, only Beverly, Massie and Paul Nichols still have children in the county school system. This doesn’t mean that the other Board members are not eminently qualified to service. However, we feel it would benefit the county to have more School Board representatives with a direct interest in the outcome of decisions on school issues.
Montague’s position should be filled and we think his replacement should be a parent with children in Rappahannock’s public schools.
