Now all this is suddenly changed. It is apparent that the high command is not in command at all, and thus all bets for 1978 are off for the present.
The turn of events at Roanoke has, of course, given the Democrats some powerful ammunition going into the 1977 general election.
Commenting on the convention, Henry Howell said, “How can a candidate who can’t even get his own party to nominate his man for lieutenant governor hope to give any leadership to the General Assembly or to the state?" It is a theme we will probably hear often in the months ahead.
Be that as it may, the GOP has emerged from the convention with three real, live and highly attractive candidates, each fully capable of defeating his Democratic opponent in November. It has never happened before in the history of the state.
This fact, combined with the freewheeling spirit of the convention delegates, makes it entirely accurate to say that the Virginia Republican Party came of age this year in Roanoke.
