Dalton’s campaign managers took full advantage of every opening in the most lavishly financed campaign in Virginia’s history. Indeed, if Howell made a monumental blunder, the Republicans did something which was monumentally right, at least in the tactical sense. For the first time in the annals of the GOP, they conducted a genuine grassroots campaign.
By direct mail, phone banks and media advertising, they got their message across, and that message was designed to scare the daylights out of the populace about Henry Howell.
And with that message, they reached the vast army of working class, largely apolitical voters which Howell thought he was reaching, but was not.
The election results clearly show which camp more clearly grasped the prevailing concern of the Virginia electorate.
It’s an interesting commentary on our times.
