needle aspiration biopsy yields a negative reading and if there is a persistent mass, a standard operative biopsy is then performed on the patient, in most cases, to be certain that cancer is not present.

The needle aspiration biops/ has yielded no falsepositive reports at MCV.

Many cancers, such as those in the breast area, are easy to diagnose but difficult to classify as to type, although specific tumor diagnosis can be made in many cases. The MCV professor said that a needle aspiration biopsy is often just one step in the complete diagnosis of a malignant tumor.

Dr. Frable, who began the procedure at MCV in 1973, said that currently an average of two needle biopsies a day are performed there.
