Rappahannock County had one of the first women mayors in Virginia when Dorothy Davis served as mayor of the town of Washington and for many of those years as head of an all woman town council.
The county has many examples of successful business women in real estate, the grocery business; there are two sculptors, a manager of a restaurant, owners of antique shops, a school, several artists and a lady minister. Some women new to the county are setting up shop as a veterinarian, a lawyer, as therapists, a farrier, as craftswomen, and dance teachers. The Rappahannock News for years has had a predominately female staff.
Surely Rappahannock is a good example of a place where women have shown themselves to be capable and effective citizens. It seems absurd to think that they should not have equal protection under the laws of these Upited States. The Equal Rights Amendment will assure that right, a right that women richly deserve.
