“If you could just find some way to get Khrushchev to stop wearing hats and JFK to start wearing them, we’ll give you all the finest hats you can wear for the rest of your life,” a hatters’ spokesman implored Kennedy administration members.
Mayor Charles B. Wheeler of Kansas City, Mo., meets the hat challenge head-on: “Except when I jog in winter, I don’t wear hats very often; I just collect them,” he said. He has 400 of them.
