Now that Thanksgiving is over, the stores have begun their Christmas preparations in earnest. Advertisements on television and radio, in newspapers and magazines, shout “Buy this! Buy that!”

We’d like to join in the campaign but our message is a little different. We don’t care what you buy just buy it in Rappahannock.

We know the county lacks many of the shopping opportunities provided by giant centers and malls. We realize that there are items on everyone’s list that just aren’t available here at home.

Still, Rappahannock offers a variety of unusual, distinctive gifts that have a country flavor. There are little shops in Washington, Sperryville, Ben Venue and Flint Hill that carry a diverse selection of high quality merchandise, much of it fashioned by Rappahannock artisans and craftsmen. They offer handsewn clothes, handcarved toys, dried flower arrangements, furniture, knickknacks, baskets, antiques, pottery, art work, herbs, plants—literally hundreds of gift ideas.
