are expensive. But the buyer is paying for time spent by a person in the creation of something worthwhile— man hours, not machine hours. That time is valuable.
Home county shopping also keeps money circulating within Rappahannock. Dollars spent here add to sales tax revenues and have a direct bearing on the money we get from Richmond for education. The more sales tax revenue we send to the state, the more money we get back in aid for education.
And shopping at home is easier.
We join the majority in decrying what commercialism has done to Christmas. We don’t like it but it has happened. Most people no longer make gifts for friends, relatives and loved ones. Instead they buy.
If shopping in the county can save frazzled nerves by eliminating the crowds, the noise, the parking headaches and snippy sales people of city shopping, then we’d be in favor of it for that reason alone. Maybe it could give us all a little more time to spend on the truly important parts of the holiday season.
