The technique, called thin* needle aspiration biopsy, is used daily in the Medical College of Virginia’s Cancer Center at Virginia Commonwealth University.
The needle aspiration biopsy is simple to perform. Following a review of a patient’s case history and a preliminary examination to determine the nature and location of the mass, the area through which the needle is to be inserted is nibbed with an alcohol sponge. Then, holding the mass firmly, the doctor quickly inserts a thin needle into it.
“The procedure is very similar to drawing blood, only it probably doesn’t hurt as much,” explained Dr. William J. Frable, director of MCV’s cytology laboratory. After insertion, vacuum pressure is applied to the syringe and the needle is moved in different directions within the mass, drawing material from several areas. The needle is withdrawn and a sterile gauze pad is applied.
