We are now accepting orders for tree seedlings for planting in February, March, and April 1978. The Virginia Division of Forestry produces seedlings at the Augusta Forestry Center, and sells them at cost of production. As an incentive for reforestation on private land, forest industry will pay one half of the cost of pine seedlings in some cases.
These seedlings are produced for purposes of reforestation of cutover land, old field plantation, Christmas tree production, wildlife habitat, and soil conservation. They cannot be used for ornamental, “screening,” or shade tree plantings.
Trees which are planted in this area for timber production include white pine, loblolly pine, yellow poplar, and black walnut. Wildlife habitat can be,, established or improved by planting persimmon, sawtooth oak, bicolor lespedeza, autumn olive, and bristly locust. Species suitable for Christmas trees are white pine and Scotch pine. The best soil stabilizers are Virginia pine, black locust, and bicolor lespedeza.
Order forms can be obtained from my office (P. O. Box 148, Madison, Va." 22727). Where assistance is needed, I can take a look at the prospective planting site and make suggestions as to species, spacing, number of trees needed, etc. Also, I can usually line up some local crews to do the planting work on tracts that are 3 acres or larger. Cutover area, and areas with a heavy sod or brush cover will require some sort of treatment to clear the area prior to planting. Christmas
