world now knows, Don- BOWLES ocrat Henry Howell suffered a stunning defeat at the hands of Republican John Dalton in their race for the governorship.
The Dalton victory cannot properly be called an upset. In spite of an early lead by Howell in the polls, as the election day drew closer, that lead dwindled and ultimately disappeared. By the time the balloting began, Dalton was generally considered to be the favorite.
But the dimensions of his victory were not expected. Dalton, by onofficial count received 706,685 votes, or 56 per cent of the 1,261,564 votes cast. He thus trounced Howell by a whopping 161,782 vote margin.
Four years before, running as an independent, Howell had lost to Republican Mills E. Godwin Jr. by a mere 15.000 votes. This year’s results are especially surprising since there were 11.000 fewer voters registered in 1977 than there were in 1973.
Why did it happen?
The answer lies primarily in the fact that Howell and his strategists made a monumental blunder in their theory of his campaign. At the same time those of Dalton, either by design or accident, developed a strategy which, as things
