Virginia motorists lead all other states in complying with the national 55 mile per hour speed limit according to a news release by the Department of State Police.
Department Superintendent D> M. Slane, referring to an October 14, 1977, “Report to the President on Compliance with the 55 MPH Speed Limit,” said, “The report indicates that Virginia leads all other states and Puerto Rico in complying with the 55 mile per hour speed limit according to 85th Percentile Rank—that speed at or under which 85 per cent of all vehicles travel.”
