In Europe, where thinneedle aspiration biopsies have gained wide acceptance, the procedure is used extensively on an out-patient basis, saving millions of dollars in hospitalization costs, according to Karolinska Institute and Hospital in Stockholm, Sweden. At Karolinska as many as 13,000 needle aspiration biopsies are performed a year.

There are few after-effects from a needle biopsy. Patients feel no discomfort or soreness after the biopsy. Normal after-effects of other biopsy methods may include occasional bleeding, infection and a left-over dizziness from the anesthesia. In addition, the patient’s sutures have to be removed.

“The thin-needle aspiration biopsy lends itself to the saving of time and cost, and is convenient for both the patient and physician in the management and follow-up of tumors,” said Dr. Frable, who has conducted workshops throughout the country on the technique.
