It Is difficult to overstate the potential economic and social significance of the year round recreational facility now being proposed for the Rappahannock Ski Area.
Until 1974 (me of the county’s most popular assets, ski operations here have since gone the way of the majority of southeast America’s weather and financially troubled winter ski slopes. But the Rappahannock Slti Area owners, with experience behind them at their Camelback, PA ski area, now plan to introduce a German designed yearround “snowless sled,” known as an Alpine Slide which would work year round regardless of skiing snow here (see December 8, Rappahannock News).
The Company is scheduled to present its proposal formally to the Board of Zoning Appeals on December 22. While this newspaper expressed concern about the Christmas season timing of the Board’s consideration, we have since been advised that there are in fact sound and practical business reasons justifying a community effort to consider it expeditiously, as outlined in a letter on the matter elsewhere on this page. It should also be in fairness, noted that this matter does not come out of the blue. The “snowless sledding” project was discussed with the Rappahannock League for Environmental Protection back in November, 1976, over a year ago. At that time, little was known about the sled operation, which had then just been introduced into the United States. The company has since tested it this year and found it a success at Camelback, as elsewhere in the United States and Europe.
