Why Closed Meeting
There is no thought by even the administration’s severest critics that anything untoward took place in these meetings, or that those attending really had anything to hide.
Bot the governor and a spokesman for his office seemed genuinely surprised when a reporter asked them why the meetings were closed.
“Historically, they have always been closed,” said Godwin, as indeed they have been.
In a sense the state government can be compared to an aristocratic Southern , family. When important stuff, like money matters, is to be discussed, the elders adjourn to the parlor with, their brandy and cigars. NW need' to trouble tilt womenfolk >or the7 young people about things which they wouldn’t understand anyway.
Our point is that both this attitude and the corporate board mentality are out of step with the times in Virginia.
After all, it is the public’s money that is being spent, and spent to the tune of a reported record-shattering S8.3 billion in the 1978-80 biennium.
The taxpayers have a right to know where that kind of money is coming from and where it’s going.
And no matter how respected the “family elders” may be, the taxpayers also have a right to keep an eye on the decision-making process involved.
