Hie Rappahannock News has over the past six months looked very carefully into the operating methods, reputation and quality of performance of the Rappahannock ski area owners. A reporter from this newspaper, who went over its Camelback operations, brought back high marks on the professionalism, quality and cleanliness of its facilities, as well as the tax benefits and enjoyment which the year round plant brought to the Camelback community. Camelback has provided a major new source of summertime employment for young people, brought new outside visitors and caused no apparent dislocation to that community. The company’s Chief Executive, James Moore, lives near Front Royal.
What people do not entirely understand, they tend to distrust. A classic example of this happened some 10 years ago in neighboring Fauquier County with a proposal to establish a “conference center” at a rural Airlie Farm. There were roars of outrage and indignation that this “industry would devastate the Fauquier countryside.” The Airlie Conference Center today stands as Fauquier’s most prized and largest industry. There is an analogy here in the opportunity which Rappahannock now has for something of value both regionally and to its own rural character and economy. The specific and limited year round recreational facilities proposed now for the Rappahannock Ski Area seem to fit our rugged mountainous area and character like a glove. It should only be carefully con- *„ strained to the specific recreational rind *^ -'*> related facilities sought to avoid a foot in the door for any possible future notions of some sort of “Disneyland”—which does not belong here.
