To the editor:
The caption over the article on the December 8th issue of the Rappahannock News states—Snowless Sledding All Year For Troubled Ski Area. Its just an ordinary sequence of thought that poses the question—Will the “Troubled Ski Area” then be a malignant area spreading trouble to other portions of Rappahannock County?
The article quotes the Wall Street lournal’s figures for a similar attraction in Bromley, Me.,—173,000 rides in one year. Even if this business were spread over 12 months, it means between 14,000 to 14,500 rides per month. While these tallies represent rides not riders, it is the logical presumption the traffic was concentrated in the summer months. Also it would be a fair guess that a visitor or rider would have satisfied his curiosity or pleasure with 2 rides per visit particularly at $2.75 per ride.
This would then suggest a monthly attendance, a monthly traffic of some 7200 riders. It is not necessary to project these figures into vehicle count, sufficient to say that the necessity to widen Harris Hollow Road would be inevitable, plus a few traffic lights in other places. •
Again this traffic would be added to the usual season traffic in Rappahannock County of summer months. The fact that the article
