Otherwise, said Bloomer, the student will become frustrated as he’s required to begin reading for content in math, science and other subject areas.
"It has seemed in past years that we begin losing children at this stage,” said Mrs. Massie. “What can be done to prevent this?” she asked.
Bloomer replied that he had not discussed this particular problem with the reading consultant. However, he reported that the Book Mark reading program adopted by the Rappahannock schools introduced new skills after the third and fourth grade that other reading series didn't address. In the fifth, sixth and seventh grades, other series repeat skills taught in the third and fourth grades, according to Bloomer.
The adoption of the new Book Mark series could have affected test results and grade level standings of Rappahannock students since the tests assumed certain skills had been taught which had not been offered to county students, according to Bloomer.
