We clearly need the additional deputy, and we can reasonably afford it. Why then did the Supervisors reject this request? There seems to be no good answer to that question. Do they doubt the need? As a neighbor who observes the comings and goings of the Sheriffs Department closely, I can personally testify to that need, and so can others. Do they fear the expense? The facts noted above remove that from being a reasonable excuse. Do they not care? That seems to be too incredible to believe!
At the meeting Thursday, there was mention of a possible additional deputy being funded through a special program of VASAP. But on closer examination that possibility does not offer any relief to our present deputies because of special functions required of a deputy in that program.
Again, there’s no clear answer to the question of “why not?” But it is clear that if we expect to continue to have reasonable service from our Sheriffs Department, then we all ought to support them by speaking to our Supervisors and by coming to the budget hearing on June 19 at 10 a.m. We can only hope that the Supervisors will reserve their decision and properly support the man that we selected to do the job as Sheriff. The loss of two good men from the department in recent months only serves to underline the seriousness of the situation.
