I went to speak for two somewhat related issues, which the Board of Supervisors ironically defeated last week.
First of all, I want to thank Supervisors Latham and Wood for trying to get an ordinance passed banning “loaded” shotguns and rifles when such were not being put to a present and necessary use. It is sad, if not someday tragic, that the Supervisors defeated this proposal for such reasons as, “that’s what the majority of people want,” and the ineffectualness or the inability to enforce such an ordinance (despite arguments from our game warden to the contrary). Giving the Supervisors the benefit of the doubt, it must be assumed that they are concerned about the need for people to protect themselves and family from criminals. Otherwise, I cannot think of one plausible reason for the ’’idle” possession of a loaded rifle, except for waiting to hunt illegally from the road. If a loaded pistol, which would have been allowed under this proposed ordinance, is not enough to make people feel protected, and if protection is really what’s at issue here, then protection from criminals must be a very
