"The Constitution says we have the right to bear arms," remarked Baldwin. He maintained that adoption of the proposed ordinances would be an infringement of this right since an unloaded gun “is just another piece of pipe.”
Supervisor H. B. Wood took exception' to Baldwin’s argument. “I don’t think we’re getting into that," he maintained. Instead, said Wood, the hunter control ordinances would give the game warden a tool he could use to combat illegal out-ofcounty hunters.
Latham moved that the ordinances be adopted with the motion seconded by Wood. Luke asked for a roll call vote. On both ordinances, Wood and Latham voted for adoption with Eastham and Baldwin opposed. Ip each case, Luke cgpt. the final, deciding vote against enactment.
Jut Another Law
“I’m against it because I think it’s just another law on the books,” announced Luke after the vote on the ordinance that would have made it illegal to carry a loaded rifle or shotgun in a vehicle on a public road. “I don’t think we can enforce it," he maintained.
Luke added that he would be willing to write to Rappahannock’s representatives in the General Assembly in support of equalization of hunting seasons east and west of the Blue Ridge.
