To the editor:
The atittude of the Rappahannock Board of Supervisors at last week’s meeting was NOT in the interest of the citizens on the issue of securing another deputy for the Sheriffs Department. The Supervisors rejected the request by the Sheriff before even hearing the issue discussed by him or others, and came to last Thursday’s meeting apparently with a closed mind. It was obvious that the Board members did not even extend Mr. Buntin the courtesy of their full attention. I can only feel that this will in turn hurt you, the citizens of Rappahannock County, by whom the supervisors are elected and who they are supposed to represent.
Rappahannock is the only county in the state without county police cars and a central communications system. The Sheriffs Department lacks adequate working space and the working conditions are not standard. The Sheriff has never asked for any unnecessary spending, is frugal and is cost conscious.
The work load has increased, service of papers has jumped, court days and court functions increased, (for example Vepco hearings where commissioners had to be transported for on site inspections). Demands from organizations wanting police attention for special events and regular court days including Circuit, Juvenile A. Domestic Relations, General District, are ajl greater.
You the citizens must decide whether or not you want law enforcement in your county. It is up to you to contact your Supervisors and to attend the special budget hearing June 19 at 10 a.m. in the courthouse at Washington when the 197879 budget will be finalized. I feel that you the citizens of Rappahannock County will respond to this vital issue.
