important priority for our Supervisors. This is what I find ironical in relation to an issue which I will discuss next.
The Board of Supervisors voted against Sheriff Buntin’s perennial request for an additional deputy, even though the state would pay two-thirds of the new deputy’s salary. Besides the problem of increasing crime and fear, there are other good reasons for expanding the sheriff's department. Our present police force is overworked putting in 70-80 hours per week, which, when translated into an hourly wage, falls below the federal minimum wage (drastically so for a new deputy). These working conditions already have been responsible in part for the loss of two deputies and possibly a third. If loaded shotguns and rifles are so necessary for our protection, then it is ironical that one more deputy is not necessary.
June 19 at 10 a.m. the Board of Supervisors will have a public hearing on the new proposed budget which, in addition to education, is too low by leaving out one badly needed deputy. Please come and express your thoughts.
