The Rappahannock Supervisors have refused to wait until the scheduled June 19 budget hearing to decide on authorization of additional personnel for the county Sheriff’s Department. Despite appeals for delay, they voted unanimously at Thursday’s Board meeting to delete Sheriff . A. Buntin s request for another deputy from the budget. In addition. Chairman F. P. Luke directed that a letter be sent to the State Compensation Board stating the Rappahannock Supervisors’ op|M>sition to funding an additional position for the Sheriff’s Department. (The Compensation Board provides two-thirds of the salaries for law enforcement personnel, localities are responsible for the remaining third. I
“Every year, we’re getting further and further behind,” stated Buntin. “We have no county cars, we have no central dispatching system and we don’t have enough help. Eventually, were going to have to have all of these things, he maintained, adding that Rappahannock was the only county that he knew of without a dispatching system and cars.
Buntin acknowledged that buying cars and a dispatching system would mean a large expenditure of county funds. Instead of pushing for these expensive items, he noted that he was asking for a “very minimal thing’ in requesting an additional deputy for the third time.
The Compensation Board allows one deputy per 2,000 people. On the basis of Rappahannock s population of slightly over .">,000, the county could have additional personnel, according to the Sheriff. ith two full-time deputies and the part-time services of Ray Jackson, the Sheriffs Department does not have “enough manpower to follow up on investigations. Buntin maintained.
Commonwealth Attorney George Davis interjected that the V irginia Alcohol Safety Action Program will furnish the county with a man and a vehicle. Davis said this would relieve some of the pressure on the Sheriff’s deputies. He added that the funds available through VASAP would go to some other county if Rappahannock didn't lake advantage of the opportunity. In
