It mounts up with helmets running around $40. boots $40, coats $100. turnout pants $60 and airpack breathing apparatus $600. Even gloves get to be an expensive item at $4.50 a pair when firemen run through four or five sets a year.
In addition, volunteers in both fire and rescue services buy a lot of their own communication equipment, including scanners, tone alert monitors and fire frequency radios for installation in cars.
In all the communities but Sperryville, the fire and rescue departments are combined with many of the same people filling both jobs. The same folks who give up weekends for fire school must also find the time to take state-required rescue training.
