The new Virginia Beef Cow-Calf Handbook has been released and is now available to Rappahannock producers.

The handbook is a comprehensive, wellorganized publication for beef producers.

Subject matter includes two general production areas—cow-calf production and feeder cattle growing or backgrounding programs. Fact sheets contain specific recommendations for breeding as related to selection and reproduction; nutrition; production management; business management; forages; herd health; equipment and facilities; marketing; and Stocker finishing.

The handbook is a hardback, three-ring notebook with convenient dividers between subject-matter areas. The owner of each book will be mailed additional fact sheets free of charge for a period of five years beginning Jan. 1.

Beef producers and others interested in the handbook should contact the Rappahannock County Extension office to obtain Virginia Beef Cow-Calf Handbook brochures and order forms.

To the editor:

In these days of the $10 billion per year Department of Energy with its 20,000 employees and its grand plans for new sources of energy, plus rewards for insulation and other conservation, I am reminded of Dido.

He was a Sperryville native of some years back, the practical years before Big Government. Now Dido inherited the knack of transferring energy into one of the components of gasohol. Instead of Solar heat, he rated weather as one-dog, two-dog, etc., and acted accordingly. Then, when his home burned in the dead of winter night, he and his animated blankets escaped unharmed, losing only a pair of shoes. He was wearing everything else, including the insteplength overcoat.

Dido would be a great help to our present Federal government, and a lot of our people these days. Don’t forget him.
