Even before receiving the grant, the project benefited from other federal assistance—the donation of the 229-acre site. The land formerly was part of the U. S. Department of Agriculture and Virginia Tech Beef Cattle Research Station.
"Initial construction will include the two cabin clusters, sewer and water lines, electricity and a road system for use by next summer.” Charles W. Rector, vice president of the center's board of directors and chairman of the building committee, said.
