Take The Plunge

But you screwed your nerve to the sticking point, submerged your basic Scottish instinct and plunged.

"What the heck, it’s not going to get any cheaper,” you told yourself.

And you were probably right. Unless of course the bottom drops out of the property market and there you are with a white elephant of a house, glaring at you from out of the past.

It’s all wrapped up now and you find yourself having a drink of bourbon on that sagging front porch. Bourbon? You can’t stand the stuff. Always Scotch.

But somehow it seems appropriate for a member of the landed class of Virginia to drink bourbon. After all, Washington distilled it at Mount Vernon.

Before you can consider the dividend drink, autumnal darkness is dropping quickly as the sun rides out of sight over the nearby mountains. There are small domestic noises from the house, but outside it is dark, almost primeval. No street lights stab the gloom.

Night noises, halfremembered from childhood, replace the thunder of the city night. They are chilling in a way. Creatures are hunting and killing each other out there according to Nature’s inexorable laws, but the scream of a dying rabbit is...well, go inside and turn on the television set.
