The Composition exercise on the examination requires students to write a 500 word essay on one of several listed topics. The students’ ability to write with technical correctness is rated above creativity. Lynn reports that the favorite selections of students who took the examination experimentally last year were “A good chess strategy” and "History repeats itself'.
In Mathematics the emphasis is on computation involving fractions, decimals, and percentiles, and on metric conversions. A large section on word problems also tests students’ ability to apply mathematics to practical problems.
