The front porch of the 18th Century Virginia farmhouse sags a bit, but the bourbon on the rocks with a splash of non-treated water from your very own well could not taste better.

The moving van leaves a curling rooster tail of gray dust in the air as you slump down and watch it disappear back into the maw of civilization.

You’ve gone and done it. You and the wife and the two kids have moved to the country.

It’s what you’ve always dreamed about: an old house ("needs work,” said the real estate ads), some land, privacy, quiet days and night, animals, gardens, clean air, water so pure you can drink from the creeks. Got it made, haven’t you?

It was a long time coming, but it's finally here.

The friendly banker seemed a little on edge, the real estate broker grinned, the seller, a dour product of several generations of hardheaded business dealings, was superficially glum (but did you see the way he rubbed his hands when I signed?).
