Five deaths have resulted from traffic accidents on Rappahannock highways so far this year. This 500 per cent increase over last year’s one death apparently sparked Supervisor Chairman E. P. Luke’s assertion at the November Board meeting that Rappahannock needs “more police patrolling—by the state or someone.”
We agree with the Supervisor Chairman. Far too many hot rodders fly down the roads at speeds way over the legal limit, endangering not ohly themselves but passengers and drivers in every other car on the highway.
But if the Supervisors expect the Virginia State Police to increase patrols here, they’d better think again. Due primarily to a lack of manpower and partially to inept scheduling, there’s frequently not a trooper to be found on Rappahannock roads. Very often, one state trooper must cover both this county and Page. Occasionally, one man is assigned to patrol Page, Rappahannock and Shenandoah—over 1,000 square miles.
