He noted that the U.Va. students are particularly interested in historical remains found near Beahm's Chapel Church and in the area of The Bower at the first switch back. Jacobsen added that the student archeologists hoped to find traces of prehistoric man in the same vicinity.
The field study proposal calls for design plans for the visitor s center to include the story of civilization in the Blue Ridge, according to Jacobsen. Interpretive devices designed for the trails will relate the chronicle of man’s development, he added.
Jacobsen said that students will be able to use information from a park study done several years ago on the feasibility of an inter-park bus system. He noted that the study had located one of the bus terminal points in Sperryville.
Jacobsen emphasized again and again that the field project was “simply a student exercise" using the park as a base. His purpose in reporting the project to the Rappahannock News, he said, was to explain the presence of students “hanging flags and driving stakes’’ within the boundaries of Shenandoah National Park
