birthplace-state for our boy. Virginia has the Blue Ridge, streams, valleys, hills, quiet, slumbering villages, horses, strange (to city folks) sporting events like foxhunting and what appears to be a certain ghostly charm. Some of this is true, but not all.

In the last 10 or 12 years, the charm has been overlaid with a veneer of hustle. Virginians with seventh and eighth generation roots on the land are taking out real estate licenses and splitting up the fine, old farms as fast as they can get the sites to perc.

Tourist trade is big business, and shops and restaurants have been quick to realize that a certain antique charm draws customers. There are still open spaces and vistas, but the price tag for a potential home owner is “...only $175,000, a little work and you’ve got a real nice place...”
