As this is written, the result of the election appears to be a virtual tie with Warner holding a microscopic one-third of a percentage point lead.
In the Dempsey-Tunney fight a half century ago, Dempsey was trying to regain the heavyweight title which he had lost to Tunney exactly one year before. In the seventh round Dempsey, who was being outpointed by the champion, caught up with him and floored him.
Tunney was badly hurt, but Dempsey failed to go to a neutral corner as newly adopted boxing rules required. For a full five seconds he hovered over Tunney before the referee could make him understand what he was supposed to do. Only when he was in the corner did the count begin. The extra few seconds gave Tunney time to recover and go on to win a decision.
In the wake of Tuesday’s election, the two senatorial candidates are locked in their own version of the battle of the long count. Apparently neither will claim victory nor concede defeat until the official canvass of the votes by the State Board of Elections on Nov. 27.
