In a review of the sheriffs department budget for 197980 at a special April 18 meeting, the Rappahannock supervisors approved a request from sheriff W. A. Buntin for an additional fulltime deputy.

According to Buntin, the county’ increased population meets state compensation board guidelines on the number of full-time positions allowable for funding. In addition, the sheriff noted that his department’s workload required a third deputy.

Accountant Walter Cox reported that the state will switch from paying twothirds of sheriffs department and constitutional officers’ salaries to full compensation beginning July 1, 1980. He told the spervisors that the county may have a difficult time getting an additional position approved once the change in funding procedure occurs.

By a three-to-two vote with „ supervisors Clarence Baldwin and H. B. Wood opposed, the supervisors approved the additional deputy. The board tabled a second request from Buntin for three county cars for his department.
