(Continued from Page 1) Settle’s house, according to Atkins, and the officers fired at him several times. “It really shocked me. They were really trigger happy,” Atkins said. “He left his car and his woman so you know he could have been found. I’ve seen the time I would have put up a hell of a fight before I’d leave my woman,” he added.
According to Mrs. Ned Settle, she and her grandson were sitting on her front porch when Mahoney’s car and the police cruisers careened around the curve, ran up the bank and broke off a small dogwood tree. “A man jumped out and ran and the police jumped out, yelled halt and started shooting right beside my house. I grabbed my grandson and ran inside,” she recalled.
Mrs. Settle’s son said there was a hole in an apple tree where it looked like a bullet went in and that there were pellet marks on the rear of his car which was parked behind the house.
