Board member Paul Nichols supported the infusion of both greenhouse and horticulture classroom as high priority needs, maintaining that a horticultural program would benefit the county's orchard industry. “How many orchardists are in the county now?” asked Nichols.
“Less and less—partly because of (lack of) help, partly because they can get more money by selling their land for development than they can get from working the land,” answered board member Arthlinda Quaintance.
Nichols added that horticulture was an excellent field of pre-college instruction that would give students the necessary background to start their own 'businesses.
