The supervisors indicated, however, that they would consider raising the mileage payments to 17 cents to meet the new state rate for reimbursement. The supervisors also agreed to request the compensation board to limit pay increases for the county’s constitutional officers— sheriff, commonwealth attorney, treasurer and commissioner of revenue—to seven percent.

The budget review followed an executive session on pending litigation with attorneys Waugh Crigler and Charlie Barrell that lasted for almost two hours. The supervisors voted at their April 5 meeting to hire Crigler to represent the county in a suit brought by developer C. L. Goode over denial of his proposed 14 lot, five-acre subdivision outside Flint Hill.

Originally scheduled for a pre-trial hearing in circuit court on May 2, the suit has been continued until May 14.

Deborah Sampseon was the first woman to enlist as a solider in the Revolutionary War. Disguised as a man, she served for three years and was honorably discharged. Today there are more than 50,000 women in the Army.
