uther data included in tne comprehensive plan chapter on agriculture shows a decline of nearly 63 per cent from 687 to 257 in the total number of farms in Rappahannock between 1949 and 1974. Average farm size has increased from 164 acres in 1949 to 298 acres in 1974.
The total value of agricultural land has shot upwards in recent years, according to the comprehensive plan figures. The average value per farm acre in Rappahannock County increased 792 per cent from $72 an acre in 1949 to $642 an acre in 1974. During the same period, the average value per farm jumped 1438 per cent from $12,441 to $191,349.
‘‘That’s not surprising —land has gone up just like everything else,” Capelle said, noting that figures had not been adjusted for inflation. He added that the increas in average farm value also reflected the increased acreage in individual farms.
