For the first time since 1949. the Rappahannock News has serious competition in its attempts to provide local news coverage. March, 1979, saw the birth of a second in-county weekly, the Rappahannock Times, a slightly-smaller-than-tabloidsize paper published by Becky Monger’s seventh grade reading class at' the elementary school.
The front page of the latest offering—volume 1, issue 3—carries news of special projects in the second and fifth grade classes, notice of an Easter bunny’s visit to Miss Schmidt’s room, a review of the high school production of “My Fair Lady,” a report on the drubbing of the teachers by the elementary basketball All-Stars, weather forecasts and the menu for the coming week.
In the earlier two editions, a top-notch reporting staff of Kevin Harrison, Tammy Jolliffe and Kristi Clarke under the direction of editor Peggy Stephenson compiled timely interviews with several faculty members.
