As of August 29, the drought which began in May officially claimed another victim with the addition of Rappahannock County to the list of the state’s agricultural disaster areas.
Under the disaster declaration from E. A. Ragland, state director of the Farmers Homes Administration, eligible Rappahannock farmers can now qualify for loans at five per cent interest with up to seven years to repay.
Application for physical and production losses are being taken through June 1, 1981, at the Farmers Home Administration office on Main Street in Culpeper.
In order to determine whether farmers have sustained a qualifying loss, they will need to know their actual yield for 1980. In most cases, this determination can’t be made until crops are harvested, according to an FmHA spokesperson.
