The Rappahannock school board received a summary of the 1980 school census from Superintendent William Bloomer at last Tuesday’s meeting and while counts show a drop of approximately 190 students compared with 1977 figures, the results appear to be far from accurate.
According to Dr. Bloomer, enumerators were instructed to make house contact. But, he added, “there was nothing to prohibit them from doing it by phone.” Based on reports from residents, the entire count in at least one district (Hampton) and partial surveys in others were conducted by telephone.
If the local census tallies are correct, the county has a total of 1,827 youngsters between the ages of 1 and 19, a drop of approximately nine per cent from 1977 figures.
