Shorter Meetings
A move to shorten the school board’s marathon sessions was also objected to by Eastham. After the board retiitned at 1:20 a.m. from its second executive session of the evening, Newbill Miller suggested that the October meeting begin at 7:30 and recess at 11 p.m. “and if we have to come back, come back another night.” He noted that since his appointment four months ago. adjurnment had come after 1 a.m. at each session.
Eastham recalled that the board had voted unanimously last year to restrict itself to 12 meetings if possible with no special sessions except at budget time. "1 hate to stay here until 1 a.m. but personally. I believe the meetings can be expedited,” he stated, opposing any move to reconvene for unfinished business still left at Miller’s suggested 11 p.m. deadline.
Mrs. Massie and Nancy Reeve both voiced support for the deadline proposal on the basis that it becomes difficult to think coherently after four or five hours of meeting. "I think 11 p.m. is plenty late. Hopefully, we can be through by that time” so extra reconvened sessions won’t be required, Mrs.
