resurfaced this year, compared to 5,100 miles last year and slightly over 5,300 miles in 1979. The reduction is due to higher costs and limited highway funds.
The amount of work to be done in each county is based on such factors as population, traffic volume, and the number of miles of highway. Resurfacing of each section is scheduled about every fifth year, although some roads. are not treated for six. seven, or eight years. Other heavily-traveled roads and roads in poor condition may be treated more often. . Last year, the light-duty resurfacing cost about $18 million. It will cost slightly more this year. About 16 million gallons of asphalt will b6 sprayed over the roads to seal cracks and 561,000 tons of stone will be spread and compacted on the surface.
Bids for plant-mixed asphalt and stone resurfacing and slurry sealing on interstate and heavy-duty primary highways and secondary roads will be received separately March 3.
