The size of the wood particles influences the rate at which moisture is expended and the wood is vaporized.”

When wood is burned in insufficient oxygen, then vapors from the solid wood fuel will not be ignited completely and burned, said the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences faculty member. Instead, they will be carried up the chimney or flue, as the hot gases rise, and will result in smoke rather than colorless gases coming from the chimney top.

“These vapors behave like water vapor in that they will condense from a gas to a liquid when they come in contact with a cold surface," he said.

Wengert explained that when the gases condense with water vapor, the resulting black or brown, smelly liquid is called creosote.
