According to Jacobsen, smells are caused by mercaptans, an extremely odiferous family of sulfur compounds. “A few parts per million are enough to make you sit up and take notice,” he said.
The park superintendent explained that mercaptan tracers are added to natural gas and propane for safety reasons so that leaks of the naturally odorless gases can be detected. Mercaptans are produced in the manufacture of snythetic fibers, he said, and there is no known way of getting rid of the substance except through dispersal by air.
Brad Fisher, Washington town councilman and chemist for the Washington Suburban Sanitary Commission, explained that mercaptans are the same substances that give a skunk's spray its distinctive odor.
