According to McDaniel, special ed enrollment stands at 135 this year, two over the projection for 1980-81. For .1981-82, anticipated enrollment is 166 and for 1982-83, 177. The assistant superintendent noted that the number of mentally retarded students served is expected to stay the same with the increase coming in speech, learning disabled Jhnd emotionally disturbed categories.
“So you’re expanding the program,” Miller stated.
McDaniel replied that the increased enrollment comes from “students in the system who’ve been identified as needing help.”
Unreliable and temporary government funding is the reason the school board has in the past made its approval of the six-year special education plan conditional upon available money, stressed Beverly Massie, school board chairman.
“So, even if we approve the plan, we’re not morally obligated to approve funds at budget time to implement it,” Miller said.
