With the increased use of wood-burning devices in the home, creosote is becoming more of a problem across the commonwealth.
For example, the Virginia State Fire Service Commission reported in a 1979 survey for one-third of the state that there were 924 creosote fires in rural areas. These fires killed 11 persons, injured 22 and caused $1.3 million in damage.
